Lighting Tips and Tricks
Figuring out a lighting scheme for any room can feel like a daunting task. Light affects not only the mood but the functionality of a space. There are ways to balance lighting throughout a space that not only create ambiance but can allow your space to radiate warmth and sophistication. I’d like to shed some light ;) on lighting solutions for your space.
One of the first things to keep in mind is that you should layer your lighting. Instead of relying on the big scary overhead light alone, use a mix of sources. You can combine ambient lighting such as chandeliers or other ceiling fixtures, with task lighting like table lamps and reading lights. You can also make a statement with sconces or other indirect lighting methods such as cove lighting. Additionally, you can create balance by playing with different bulb types. This lets you control the intensity of the light. Warmer tone bulbs help create a cozy and inviting space. Cooler tone bulbs like fluorescent are best suited for a well-lit workspace. There are many color changing bulbs on the market that can give your space a drastic mood change instantly. Another thing to try is to focus on task lighting. Thinking about how you use the space and where adding lighting would be helpful for specific tasks. Adding light above kitchen counters, work desks and reading books enhance functionality while reducing eye strain. You can add depth to your space and highlight favorite pieces in a beautiful way with spotlights or picture lights.
I've been known to say that it isn’t worth putting lights in the ceiling if you aren't going to install dimmer switches. It's important to be able to adjust the lighting depending on the time of day. This can be taken a step further by investing in smart lighting systems so you can control your lights remotely or through voice control, adding convenience and energy efficiency to your home. Also, during the day you should be sure to embrace natural light by keeping curtains or blinds open. Natural light enhances the aesthetics but also contributes to your well-being. I hope this has been illuminating for you!
