Reflecting on 2024: The Design Trends We Loved Most

As the end of 2024 approaches, we find ourselves reflecting on the interior design trends that we loved in our homes this past year. At Next Door Interior Design we believe you can interpret trends to reflect your personal style. Knowing what these trends are and how we used them can inspire the redesign for your own space. We love timeless design and believe these styles will hold strong! The key themes we saw this year resonated with us and our clients as we transformed their homes into personalized sanctuaries.

As we approach the end of the year, it's the perfect time to reflect on the interior design trends that shaped our homes in 2024. At Next Door Interior Design, we believe that understanding these trends can help homeowners on Long Island make informed choices for their own spaces. This year, we saw several key themes emerge that resonated deeply with clients and transformed homes into personalized sanctuaries.

Up first, and our absolute favorite trend that we noticed this year was seeing people move away from grey and embrace earthy tones. Finally! Our new staples became warm neutrals, rich velvety browns, and soft muted greens, all connecting us to nature and creating a sense of calm. This trend aligns with our mission of creating spaces that enhance the quality of life. These warm and inviting colors can create an inviting atmosphere that is comforting and stylish.

Here are some ways we’ve recently liked incorporating these earthy tones. When selecting paint color and wallpaper options, you could consider soft creams & beiges with brown undertones or dusty olive greens for the walls, trim and ceiling to create a serene backdrop. Using color theory to bring in warm toned textiles such as pillows and throws against the cooler backdrop add texture and coziness. Layering in wooden furniture pieces with natural finishes will round out this color palette.

“Sustainability” is another theme that we saw continue this past year where people want to opt for Eco-friendly materials and practices

More homeowners are becoming conscious of their home’s environmental impact and have a growing awareness of the need to preserve our planet.  We are bombarded with so many green-washed products, it’s hard to know what is actually beneficial. But don’t worry, here are some simple and surefire ways to know you’re doing something good for our planet. Selecting energy-efficient lighting for your home puts less of a toll on the electrical grid with lower energy consumption, as well as cost. A simple idea is to use recycled materials, whether it’s building materials that are made with recycled content or it's incorporating an antique piece of furniture into your design helping to minimize the ecological impact of creating something new. Similarly, sourcing locally made or sourced products can help support your community and also reduce transportation emissions.

An emphasis on personalization and individuality has been a vital aspect in interior design this past year. Our clients sought to create spaces with us that truly reflect their individual preferences and lifestyle. We love this because at Next Door Interior Design we believe that exceptional design is not only about the aesthetics of a space, but also about telling a story through thoughtful selections.  Some of our favorite ways to add a personal touch is through using unique decor items that reflect your interests, such as travel memorabilia, books or family heirlooms. Artwork can tell a lot about your personal style and tastes, while being visually impactful. Having an interior designer create a tailored furniture floor-plan is one of the most personal touches you can make, dictating the specific use of your space that suits how you want to live and entertain.

We’ve seen the rise of versatile living areas and multi-functional spaces with remote work continuing in 2024. Homeowners wanting to maintain comfort and style while also maximizing the square footage of their home have turned to flexible furniture pieces such as modular sofas, sofa beds or pieces incorporating storage, making shifting the purpose of a space simple. A type of multi-functional space, the Great Room benefits greatly from using the simple technique of using rugs designating specific areas and by placing furniture groupings with appropriate scale and spacing to define different areas within an open space. Incorporating built-in shelves, cabinets or other smart storage solutions to keep spaces organized and free from clutter.

Related to our first trend of bringing the earthy tones of nature into our homes, Biophilic design focuses on the human connection to nature, and gained popularity in 2024. Indoor plants are inherent mood boosters and add lush shades of green to your space, you can let easy to maintain houseplants help purify the air in your home. By maximizing natural light with large windows or skylights you can create a brighter, more uplifting environment, not only for you but for your new houseplants too. Houseplants aren’t the only way to add a bit of nature. Use stone, wood, and other organic shapes, textures and materials to help you feel integrated with nature.

As we ring in 2025, these design trends remind us to stay true to ourselves, stay organized and stay connected to the natural world around us. We hope this serves as inspiration for your 2025 home improvement resolutions. At Next Door Interior Design, we are excited to help Long Island homeowners navigate these trends and more to turn their visions into beautifully customized spaces. Whether you’re considering a full renovation or simply looking to refresh your decor, our personalized Next Door Build + Design Process ensures that your dream home is just a call away.
